Upgrading
Dear Joel,
I just bought your book on Amazon.com and live in the Netherlands, so I’ll have to wait about two weeks before receiving it. I was wondering if you know anything about KLM's upgrade policies? I'm planning to go to Curacao (Netherlands Antilles) in November and as this is a nine-and-a-half-hour flight (AMS - CUR & CUR - AMS) I would appreciate it to fly business, but can't afford it. any tips?

Dear Kevin,
There are two main things to keep in mind. First, pre-plan by calling the airline and ask them how the business class and first class cabins look for your specific flights. If both the cabins are full you might consider seeking an alternative flight where the plane is not as full. In addition, I suggest the easy approach of just asking for an upgrade (it is amazing what this simple question will yield). Be sure to stress your willingness to be a loyal and long-term customer with KLM. Currently, KLM is offering a number of upgrade incentives that seem to be consistently in flux. So when you are asking about the availability of seats in business and first class, you want to inquire about how you can upgrade. While doing this, communicate your willingness to work with the airline and emphasize your desire to continue to do business with KLM. By the way, thank you for purchasing my book—I hope you enjoy it and benefit from it.
All the best.
