Shipping from Overseas

Dear Kathy,

International shopping involves so much carrying. I wouldn't mind it if I felt comfortable with the mail in different countries—if mail was safe or inexpensive or reliable. What countries would you say make it easy to wrap up a slightly fragile stone head and ship it to the US or a parcel of leather goods, purses, etc; and which countries would you avoid?

Dear Patty,

Ah, the challenge of international shipping. Fall in love with that glorious carpet or the fragile stone head, but no way to cart it home?

The Fearless Shopper has heard both happy stories and disappointing stories. You'll find shipping from most European cities pretty reliable especially in those stores where you've used a credit card. Many other countries are safe as well if you’re dealing with a reliable merchant. I recently shipped a large, handmade glass vase from a craft gallery in Sydney, Australia. It took about a month but it arrived intact, and the shipping was relatively inexpensive.

In general, ask the merchant if they've had experience shipping and use your best judgment. Then charge your purchase. If in doubt, don't let the store ship it. You can ask your hotel for help with packing material or if they know of a reliable shipper.

Freight carriers from the States have offices overseas in many countries. They do tend to be expensive so it's a good idea to check with them for rates and ask lots of general questions and those about insurance, duty, and customs clearance.

Developing countries tend to pose more problems, and if you're in a marketplace and you've just bargained for that priceless treasure, carry it away with you.

Take an empty, folding suitcase along with you for items you want to carry home. Or bring old clothes, give them away along your route and you'll have space for your new purchases.

Good luck.
