Flying after 50 Years
Dear Penny Pincher,
My husband, sister, and I are all traveling to the US from Britain in July (to JFK and then across to the West Coast). The trip is to celebrate my sister's and husband's 50th birthdays, and it's the first time she will have flown. We're traveling with United and have economy seats.
What do you think the chances of getting upgraded are?
Thank You!!!
Karen

Dear Karen,
How exciting for you and your family—a first time flight to the U.S.. In the weeks before your flight keep checking with the airline to assure that business class/first class seats are available for your flight. Also inquire with United Airlines about your fare being upgradeable. In the past few months United Airlines has offered special upgrade rates on transatlantic flights, so you might qualify for an upgrade at a nominal rate.
Lastly, if you are not upgraded by any of these means, then at the airport find a friendly gate agent and explain to them the special circumstances of your trip. In many instances when a sincere and friendly traveler approaches a gate agent with a compelling story they can feel sympathetic and will offer an upgrade.
Have a great trip,
Joel
