Ticket to Upgrade
Hiya,
I was reading your answers about free upgrading economy tickets. I am not a frequent flyer member of any airline, although I am training to be a pilot. I have never had an upgrade in my life, and I was just wondering do I have any hope of getting an upgrade and if so how?
Thanks very much.

Hi Emily,
The short answer is yes. While flying from Israel to New York’s JFK airport, I told the captain that I was working towards my instrument pilot rating, and he upgraded me to the jump seat in the cockpit.
Due to post 9-11 security concerns that will probably not happen again. However, when given a compelling reason, airlines can be generous with upgrades. Training to be a pilot makes you an insider, and this could be your ticket to an upgrade.
On your next flight, mention to the gate agent that you’re a pilot in training and see what happens.
All the best,
Joel
