First-Class Planning
Hi,
I will be travelling to Sri Lanka next September with Sri Lankan airlines for my honeymoon and wondered what the chances are of an upgrade to business class. What is the best approach to obtain upgrades?
Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your message.
Time is on your side, giving you great options.
You might consider a credit card that will offer you a two-for-one or companion ticket by purchasing one business class ticket. Credit cards that usually offer this option are the American Express Platinum Card, Diners Club Card, and most premium Visas and Mastercards.
Another credit card strategy is to use a credit card associated with SriLankan Airlines (Citibank) and accumulate enough points for business class tickets or upgrades. This will earn you bonus points, and the points will show up in your account sooner, meaning that you can use your card well into next August.
If possible, I recommended flying at least 25,000 tier miles with SriLankan to earn elite status. This will provide you with preferential service and increase your chances of "just" asking for an upgrade, especially if you mention it's your honeymoon.
Keep in mind that a year in airline's time is an eternity. Without doubt airfares will change, bonus miles opportunities will come and go, and services are always being transformed.
Keep up to date with the latest news, and changes that might effect your trip.
Congratulations and have a great time.
Joel
