Upgrade Low-Down

Hello,

I liked your article on Elite status, but I have a question or two. With elite status with Delta, do you get free upgrades, or do you just get the right to get an upgrade? And if you pay for the upgrade, do you pay with miles or cash or either?

Secondly, can a person apply for a Black Amex card, or do you have to be invited?

Thanks.

Hi William,

When you reach Sliver Medallion with Delta (first tier elite level) and beyond, you qualify for unlimited upgrades based on availability. If you have a Y, B, or M fare you can book an upgrade at time of booking, otherwise there is a time schedule depending on your status. Platinum is five days before flight, Gold is three days, and Sliver is one day prior to departure.

You can use miles for an upgrade as well as purchase an up-fare the day of travel. I believe these upgrades range from $25 to $150, depending on the length of flight. Incidentally, if you purchase an upgrade the day of flight you bypass the upgrade list and get an immediate upgrade.

The Black Card by American Express is by invitation only.

I hope this helps.

Joel
