Pretty Old Coins

Joel,

I happened upon your contrarian travel tactics article and enjoyed it very much. This question is off that topic but I couldn't find a place to ask so I'm hoping you can help.

I'll be traveling to see my dad who wants me to start taking some of his possessions. First up are some pretty old coins that could be quite valuable. My question: What do I need to do as far as making arrangements while traveling with these coins so I don't run into any problems?

1) best way to pack them
2) is it possible screening personnel could think I may have stolen
them based on the quantity? Would it help if I had my dad write a note
of explanation?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for writing.

The first thing I would do is consider what condition the coins are in. If they are in mint condition with individual holders you'll want to take special care with them. I collect old U.S. currency and as with coins any scratches or marks can considerably reduce their value. If the coins are loose in a bag, most likely they are not in proof condition. However, I would go through them and sort out any that look in good shape. Wrap these separately. You can find coin holders at any coin store or on the internet.

You should have no problem carrying the coins through airport security. If you want to side with caution you can have a note from your father. I would carry the coins on-board if possible.

Another alternative is to ship them via UPS or FEDEX with confirmed delivery. Using 2nd or 3rd day delivery should be fairly affordable.

Good luck,

Joel
