From Iraq to Hawaii
Sir,
I am a service member who has just returned from a tour in Iraq. I am trying to plan a 7-day vacation with my wife in Oahu, Hawaii (I thought we would go to Oahu because of the social atmosphere there, and she has never been to Hawaii period!). Trouble is, both of us want to do this without spending more than we have to...so, I have leave from 31 October to 8 November. Can you recommend a really cheap but safe and clean hotel in Honolulu? Of course I prefer something fairly close to the beach, but it doesn't have to be on the beach.
Respectfully,
Keith F.

Hi Keith,
Thank you for your honorable service to our country.
As you stated, the social climate in Hawaii is very kind to our service personal, especially to those who just returned from Iraq.
I suggest calling hotels directly in Hawaii and explain your situation and inquire if they can give you a government discount and a room upgrade. By the way, your flight might qualify for a government fare.
There are a number of good hotels that will be happy to help you. You can start with the Starwood Collection at www.starwood.com, the Hilton hotels at www.hilton.com, or one of my favorites, The Halekulani, at www.halekulani.com.
The Halekulani is a special place that has a long history of supporting our troops, and I think you will find it convenient as it is on Waikiki Beach, close to shopping and restaurants.
Have a wonderful trip—you deserve it.
Joel
