Tibet

Chinese officials have begun cracking down on private religious practice in Lhasa, confiscating altars, thangka paintings and other Buddhist objects from local homes. Previously such restrictions only applied to government workers and Communist Party members, but recently the ban was extended to the general public. For years one common way for visitors to connect with locals was to give them photos of the Dalai Lama. Now, such actions could get them in trouble with authorities.
