A general amnesty put in place last year brought hopes that the political violence that has produced 100,000 deaths since 1992 would end, but recent massacres of students and bus travelers suggest that the troubles are far from over. During the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, which is drawing to a close, some 140 people have been killed. Most of the recent violence has occurred outside the city of Algiers, but travel to the city should be undertaken with caution.
