China’s annual flood season is one of the worst in memory, with some 100 million people affected by floods and more than 900 killed. The worst hit provinces are Hunan and Yunnan. The Yangtze River is threatening to flood and officials have ordered the strengthening of dikes and stockpiling of supplies. Also in Hunan, Dongting Lake is on the verge of flooding, threatening 10 million people who live around it. Authorities have mobilized thousands to work the embankments and hold back the floodwaters.
