China is rapidly becoming one of the worldÂ’s most dangerous places to drive, or be an urban pedestrian. Bad roads and inexperienced drivers have produced an automobile death rate some two and a half times that of the U.S., which has many more vehicles. In cities, no one stops for anyone else, including pedestrians, who never win in a collision with a vehicle, and drivers ignore traffic laws and rules of the road that are generally accepted in Western countries.
