Guagua Pichincha, the volcano that towers over Quito, spewed ash and gas Oct. 5, temporarily closing the international airport and causing panic in the city. Another volcano, Tungurahua near the resort town of Baños, is also spewing ash. Ecuador’s vulcanologists, however, don’t expect either to erupt explosively in the near future. If they’re right, the worst that will happen for travelers is inconvenience caused by airport closures and possible respiratory problems caused by ash in the air.
