There are also reports of scams being perpetrated against travelers and UK citizens arriving by ferry from France by thieves masquerading as customs officials. They flag down cars coming off the ferries and search for items they deem illegal, confiscating what they can get away with. Changes in EU laws have lifted restrictions on amounts of goods such as liquor and tobacco that can be brought into the country for personal consumption, but not everyone is aware of the new guidelines.
