The long-running saga of coup leader George Speight has taken another turn as he lost his seat in parliament because he missed two parliamentary sessions. He was unable to attend because he is imprisoned awaiting trial for treason for the coup he launched in 2000 when he held the prime minister and other officials hostage and brought down the government. His supporters are in an uproar over the recent action and have threatened to demonstrate. Police in Suva have called for calm, but trouble is possible if protests occur.
