The U.S. Embassy announced Oct. 17 that it had received reports that American citizens may become the target of attacks in the popular tourist city of Antigua. The attacks reportedly have been planned to come after staged armed robberies or automobile accidents. Police are investigating. Also on Oct. 17, a mob of about 1,000 locals torched a police post and five vehicles in the mountain village of Concepcion Huista when police failed to make an arrest in the murder of a local man. Residents believe that a police officer committed the murder. This sort of vigilante justice is becoming common in rural Guatemala, and travelers should avoid protests or groups gathering around crime scenes.
