The worst floods to hit Jakarta in decades paralyzed the capital the weekend of Feb. 2 with many major roads partially blocked and water sloshing into buildings in the central commercial district. The floods inundated low-lying communities along rivers and 300,000 people were moved to makeshift shelters. Many areas of the capital were without power, and rain was expected to fall for another week. Access to and from the international airport was impaired, and may continue to be so until the waters recede.
