Two years after student protests led to the overthrow of President Suharto, pressure is mounting to bring him to justice for his many years of abusing power. Demonstrations in Jakarta May 13 were suppressed with tear gas, and protests in the mainly Chinese business district turned into riots when police tried to remove street stalls. On a positive note, the government and separatists in the Sumatran province of Aceh reached a cease-fire agreement, possibly paving the way for a peaceful settlement of a conflict that has been simmering for 25 years.
