Violence has occurred at demonstrations in Jakarta and elsewhere as the new assembly debates issues ranging from freedom for East Timor and who will become the next president. It’s a politically turbulent time throughout the country and anti-Western demonstrations have taken place in Jakarta, Surabaya and elsewhere. Anti-foreigner sentiment is high in East Kalimantan and Nusatenggara Timur, where attacks have happened. Travel to these areas should be avoided. Consider deferring travel to Indonesia until the new president is chosen and the fallout from the vote is known.
