Genoa hosts the G-8 Summit July 20-22, and between 50,000 and 80,000 demonstrators are expected to descend upon the city before and during the meeting. Access to much of the city, including many major tourist sites, will be closed to the general public. If possible, reschedule travel to Genoa to avoid the summit dates.
Around the rest of the country, strikes by air traffic controllers, pilots, flight attendants, ground crews, truckers, railway and ferry workers have thrown Italy’s summer travel into chaos. Expect delays, and follow local reports closely if your itinerary is inflexible.
