An unspecified security threat caused the closing of the U.S. embassy in Rome Jan. 5-7. In the 1970s and 80s Rome suffered a number of terrorist attacks, so such threats must be taken seriously here. Although embassy officials are confident that the threat has been nullified, the prudent course of action, if you need consular assistance, would be to approach the consulates in other cities.
