Several days of gang violence in and around Kingston prompted the prime minister to order the army deployed throughout the countryside to quell unrest. A dozen people were killed during the period of July 7-9 bringing the total to more than 40 in the last two months. While the army deployment suggests an island-wide problem, this wave of violence has largely been restricted to Kingston and environs, with the most trouble occurring in the districts of Tivoli Gardens and Denham Town. The main tourist areas on the island are on the north coast, far removed from Kingston.
