The crime-plagued Mombasa-Nairobi highway is now under 24-hour police surveillance and, according to the officer in charge of the region, the rampant banditry the road was known for is history. Police broke up the syndicate that coordinated attacks by tracking victims via cell phones, arresting some 600 suspects, but the alleged mastermind remains at large.
