Snatch thefts that have led to deaths when victims resisted have created the perception that such crime is out of hand, especially in Kuala Lumpur, but officials say that incidents have actually decreased in the past six months. Still, some 30 bag snatchers have been arrested in the past three weeks, eight of them apprehended by members of the public. In Kuala Lumpur, the Golden Triangle business and shopping district has been the site of about one-fourth the incidents in the city, but that number is decreasing. In an effort to combat the problem, officials installed security cameras at various places in the capital, and intend to install more. The cameras have been credited with averting more than 30 incidents.
