The murder in Kuala Lumpur of a U.S. legal resident, a Malaysian woman married to an American citizen, has prompted authorities to push to recruit another 23,000 police officers in an effort to combat rising crime and address the publicÂ’s concern about it. The woman was abducted when she left a family celebration in a wealthy section of the city to go to her car to get some belongings, and was found dead four days later. The additional officers will boost the force to 80,000, but officials acknowledge that a big challenge in fighting crime is combating corruption in police ranks because of low pay.
