A petty incident between members of an Indian funeral procession and a Malay wedding celebration ignited what has been called Malaysia’s worst ethnic violence in three decades on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. The conflict began in a working class suburb and spread to more affluent areas of Petaling Jaya, Kelana Jaya and Sungai Way. At least six people were killed and more than 150 arrested. A heavy police presence has brought the situation under control.
