The magnitude-7.5 earthquake that stuck Oaxaca state Sept. 30 caused extensive damage to the coastal cities of Tututepec, San Augustin Chayuco and San Juan Lachao, and brought plaster down from the walls of colonial buildings in Oaxaca city. The ancient Zapotec site of Monte Alban, one of Mexico’s premier archeological attractions, suffered moderate damage and will be closed while officials assess the extent of the destruction and workers reduce the risk of falling debris.
