A tourist flight to Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park crashed into a mountain Jan. 20 killing all six aboard, including the pilot and five passengers. The Air Fiordland Cessna dropped out of a clear sky to hit the final mountain before reaching the pristine fiord some 465 miles south of Wellington. It was the second fatal crash in the area for the airline, the first occurring in December 1989. Milford Sound draws thousands of tourists annually to take sightseeing flights, and the region’s safety record is as good as most busy tourist areas where small aircraft operate.
