Pilots for international airlines report that the radar system here breaks down periodically, sometimes for weeks at a time, forcing pilots to use the instrument landing system to guide their planes, creating increased delays and a higher chance of error. The U.S. Consulate in Lagos reports that airports around the world have functioned, and continue to function, safely without radar, and Lagos officials have shown no real concern.
Nigeria has closed its border with Benin because Benin has failed to crack down on cross-border crime. Nigeria complained of armed robberies, smuggling and human trafficking and asked Benin to take decisive measures to stop these crimes, but little progress has been made.
