An anonymous statement released Nov. 15 supposedly by a group of disgruntled air force commanders suggested that a possible coup was brewing against the government of Alejandro Toledo. Toledo took office almost four months ago after President Alberto Fujimori fled the country in disgrace and has seen his popularity plummet because of an alleged failure to fulfill his campaign promises. The statement suggested that Congress could avoid the group’s intervention if it investigated government corruption. Should a coup occur, business and transportation would no doubt be temporarily affected.
