The U.S. State Department has updated its announcement of terrorist threats and security risks, particularly noting its concern that a Bali-type attack could occur in other Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines. The Philippine government, however, was quick to take issue with the State Department, calling the advisory reckless and stating that there had a been a marked improvement in the security situation and the travel advisory “disregarded efforts to maintain peace and order in the country.” Despite the opposing views, there is little argument that the Philippines faces significant challenges in fighting crime, insurrection and potential terrorism. Travel here with caution.
