My girlfriend and I are going to spend a week at the Ritz-Carlton in Maui on Feb. 14th. We spent 8 days there early last year. I was hoping you might have some tips for getting upgraded to a suite. I am currently booked in an ocean view room. Any advice would be appreciated.

As you probably read in my book, the Ritz-Carlton in Maui is one of my favorite hotels. I suggest that you call the hotel directly and speak with the reservation manager and tell her that you are planning a return trip for the week of the 14th. (The hotel will have a record of your last visit along with your current reservation.) Tell the reservation manager how nice your past visit was and how much you are looking forward to your upcoming visit—especially since you are taking your girlfriend away for Valentine’s. Then ask if an executive suite or an ocean front suite is open, or at the very least, request that she place a message in your record to upgrade you when you check-in, based upon availability.
Then when you check-in, mention the name of the person you spoke with to the front desk representative and tell him that she should have placed a note in your record to upgrade you. Be sure to tell the front desk person that this is a return visit and how much you’re looking forward to your stay.
Also refer to the many tips in my book about upgrading at a hotel.
Have a fun time.
