Hi Penny Pincher,

We (my hubby and I) want to go to Mumbai, India in December. Our nearest airport is RDU (North Carolina). Being a peak season I think we might have to book the tickets in advance. Could you suggest someplace where we can find cheap deals on the airfare? Are agents cheaper than online booking and when should we book the tickets for best deal?

Thanks a lot in advance!!

Since you are traveling in December, I would suggest waiting until the end of the summer before booking your tickets. With the elections this fall, I suspect that international travel will be weak especially to a location of possible unrest—Mumbai.

With respect to the method of booking your travels, I always recommend going directly to the travel provider—the airline’s online site is usually best. When booking directly through the airlines web site, you will not pay more than you would on a third party web site, you have great opportunities for an upgrade, and you alleviate possible hassles in the event of rebooking, flight cancellations, delays, etc.—this is even more relevant on international itineraries.

Currently Delta Air Lines offers a flight from Raleigh/Durham, NC to Mumbai, India that connects through JFK.

Have a good trip.
