Dear Penny Pincher,

I’d like to obtain two free domestic round trip tickets on Delta using my Sky Miles, but I’ve only got 42,457 miles and need 50,000. However, I do have 13,500 United Airlines Mileage Plus miles. How can I manipulate those UAL miles to obtain another 7,543 Sky Miles for travel on Delta?

Thanks for your help.

Hi John,

United Airlines does not offer any methods for transferring miles out of a Mileage Plus Account.

However, you do have a few alternatives for making up your mileage deficit. I suggest you try one of the following strategies.

Try a program that partners with Delta SkyMiles, such as; Diners Club-Club Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Hyatt Gold Passport, Le Meridien Moments, Marriott Rewards, Priority Club Rewards, Radisson Gold Rewards, or Starwood Preferred Guest.

Each partner maintains its own conversion ratios, therefore, the number of points that must be transferred to a Delta SkyMiles account varies by partner. For example, when transferring Diners Club-Club Rewards points, the transfer rate is a 2:1 ratio, so 40,000 points, converts to 20,000 SkyMiles, whereas Le Meridien Moments points convert to SkyMiles at a ratio of 1:5, meaning 4,000 points would equal 20,000 SkyMiles. The Starwood transfer option is a 1:1 conversion rate, therefore, 20,000 points from Starwood Preferred Guest gives you 20,000 SkyMiles.

You can also purchase a maximum of 15,000 SkyMiles within any calendar year through Buy Miles for You program. Miles can be purchased in increments of 1,000 and are applicable toward all SkyMiles awards. The cost is $25 per 1000 miles plus applicable taxes. Currently, Delta’s web site is offering a 15% bonus through August 15, on every mileage purchase when you use promotion code INSIDER. There is a $25 processing fee for purchases on-line, so if you plan on purchasing fewer than 7000 miles, I suggest calling Delta reservations at 800-221-1212 to purchase your miles.

If you apply for the Gold Delta SkyMiles Card (no annual fee for the first year) you can earn 10,000 bonus SkyMiles the first time you make a purchase with your Card. You’ll also earn Double Miles on every eligible dollar. For additional details on this and other SkyMiles earning opportunities, go to Get Delta Miles.

I hope this helps.

Joel
