Using Your Age for an Upgrade

Using Your Age for an Upgrade 2016-01-31T19:41:56-07:00

Hi Joel,

I am an exchange student from Austria and I spent the last ten months in Australia. My flight back home goes in June and I was wondering if there is any chance that I could get an upgrade from my economy class ticket to business class.

I am only 17 years old so I am afraid that the operator at the desk would not take me seriously (he is only a little child, why does he need to fly business class?).

Can you give me a few tips on what to say? I’m flying Lauda Air.

Thank you very much in advance!

Hi Gerhard,

My first bit of advice is to use your age to your advantage. When asking for an upgrade, stress the fact that you have the potential of 50+ years of future business. By all means stress your future loyalty!

Also, if your parents travel frequently with Lauda Air, ask the agents to look up your parents’ account and try to use their loyalty as leverage.

To minimize the effect of your age, try to dress nicely. A suit and tie is not necessary, but a nice pair of slacks and freshly pressed shirt will be helpful.

Most importantly, have faith in your ability to get an upgrade. Lastly, you might want to review some of the other questions dealing with first class upgrades.

Good luck—and let me know how it works out.
