The government has stated that it cannot guarantee the safety of the capital city of Honiara on the island of Guadalcanal because of increased ethnic unrest. Armed militants maintain roadblocks outside the city, and in recent months conflict between rival groups has escalated. Other areas of the islands have not been affected, but travel to Guadalcanal should be deferred.
