Noordhoek Beach is part of Table Mountain National Park and one of Cape Town’s most beautiful beaches, but it has become dangerous to walk even during the day because of crime. In the past few months two European diplomats have been attacked and robbed on the beach by knife-wielding assailants. At least seven other people were robbed and injured in the past two weeks, including two Scandinavian tourists. The beach is so big that police claim they can’t adequately patrol it, but national park rangers have said they would begin patrols. In another area of Cape Town, locals have taken the law into their own hands to combat crime. In Sea Point, a district with a reputation for crime, a group goes out and simply stares at potential muggers, giving them the evil eye until they leave.
