Seoul must be the protest capital of the world, with official reports stating that the city had 2,799 demonstrations in the first four months of this year, an average of 23 a day. Of these, about 20 percent were illegal. Violence during demonstrations is increasing, with the use of firebombs rising tenfold. The most recent demonstration (as of this writing) was a rally by 8,000 students protesting the Bush administration’s plans to develop a missile defense system, saying it is destroying the nascent reconciliation between North and South Korea.
