Every great explorer has been caught with his pants down at least once. Christopher Columbus’ trip was certainly not smooth sailing-he suffered a devastating hurricane on the return trip of his maiden voyage. Robert Peary lost eight toes to frostbite in his numerous attempts to reach the North Pole. Very few true adventures ever end without some misadventure. In There’s No Toilet Paper on the Road Less Traveled: The Best of Travel Humor and Misadventure, funny man Doug Lansky will expose the wrong turns and foibles of some of the world’s not-so-great adventurers. As this collection of goofy travel stories shows, the perfect trip where nothing goes wrong is surely not the memorable trip-which is one where everything goes wrong and one lives to tell the tale and laugh about it.
Whether you’re reading about Nigel Barley taking a monkey to the movies in Cameroon, Dave Barry’s pathetic attempt to learn Japanese, Donna Marazzo’s trying to use a high-tech Italian toilet, or Alan Zweibel’s trip to a clothing optional resort where he discovers that nudity is not a spectator sport. . .you’ll laugh out loud, smile, chuckle, and shake your head at human folly and resiliency.
There’s No Toilet Paper on the Road Less Traveled proves once again that a sense of humor is the one indispensable travel tool you shouldn’t leave home without!
